As our country comes together in a time of healing, Eat REAL helps communities by working with schools to increase real food access for children. Our certification program teaches the importance of healthful food and aides schools in transforming their meal programs so that all children can access real, healthful foods.
The healing power of real food is a universal right that everyone deserves. A nutritious diet based on scratch cooking can heal our minds and bodies. Eating whole foods prepared healthfully can drastically reduce our chances of developing processed food-related diseases like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and high blood pressure. A diet rich in whole grains, vegetables, and fruits can help calm our minds by easing anxiety symptoms.
Purchasing foods locally and in-season promotes sustainability and supports community farmers. A feeling of connectedness is fostered when we gather – safely – with friends and family to cook and share a meal. Food is universal, which is why Eat REAL works to bring healing, whole foods to our communities through school meal programs.
Eat REAL’s certification program helps schools identify specific tangible steps to improve the nutritional quality and environmental impact of the meals they serve. We help them prioritize these changes for the most significant impact and identify ingredient sourcing that is cost-effective, available, and meets Eat REAL’s standards.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Eat REAL has been working with the cohort of schools seeking certification to go above and beyond for their communities. Minneapolis Public Schools, the Walnut Creek School District, and the Boulder Valley School District have been providing supplemental food boxes for families in addition to their regular student meal offerings. Eat REAL partnered with The Farmlink Project to help bring 19 tons of surplus produce from local farms to Mt. Diablo Unified School District. By connecting local farms to our schools, we help get nutritious food to communities that need it most while supporting local agriculture and reducing food waste.
