USDA Extends Free Meals for Kids Through December 31, 2020

#SchoolLunchForAll (1)

Just announced! The USDA will extend the waivers from the summer meals program through Dec 31, 2020. These flexibilities allow all children to continue receiving free meals from schools, no questions asked.

According to the USDA’s official statement, “This unprecedented move will help ensure – no matter what the situation is on-the-ground – children have access to nutritious food as the country recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic”.

We know this is something our school district partners have been asking for so we are thrilled with this news. School meals are vital for our children, especially when it comes to protecting them against COVID-19. Without continued access to proper nutrition, we would be putting our next generation at higher risk, especially BIPOC youth who are disproportionately impacted by food system injustice. By investing in our school meal programs and moving towards universal free school meals for all children we can fight hunger, racism, and COVID-19.
