Right now, experts say there is the most hunger in the U.S. in decades due to the economic consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic. During the pandemic, millions and millions of families depend on school meal programs and extra donations to fight hunger.

With Covid-19 relief funding, Eat REAL supported one of the communities most impacted by Covid-19 in the Bay Area. Special thanks to the San Francisco Foundation. Eat REAL connected families with extra meals through San Rafael City School District in the Canal Community of Marin. This school district has become a lifeline in providing its students as well as their families with meals.

The nonprofit partnered with Mindful Meats – a local, woman-founded company- to purchase sustainable, responsibly raised, organic, grass fed protein. This protein was included in holiday take-home pantry boxes for families in addition to their children’s school meals. The donation is part of Eat REAL’s efforts to feed kids and families real food who need it most during Covid-19 and beyond.

Marin County is one of the most racially segregated counties in the Bay Area, with the Canal district having one of the largest income disparities in the county. The Canal community is where one third of all of the confirmed Covid-19 cases in Marin have been so far. While the Latinx community accounts for 16% of Marin County’s population, 70% of the county’s confirmed COVID-19 cases with known ethnicity have occurred among Hispanic/Latinx residents. Hunger rates have also disproportionately increased in Latinx and Black families compared to white families.

Their Director of Nutrition Services, Alan Downing, shared a big “Thank you!”  to all donors supporting Eat REAL and helping get extra meals to their families and students. In addition to the school meals, the district has partnered with local food banks and pantries to build supplemental food boxes for their families. The addition of this high-quality protein will hopefully help ease the burden of hunger through the holidays. We’ll also continue to work to make structural changes that increase health equity across our nation.  Thank YOU for your support!
