National School Lunch Week

Today begins National School Lunch Week, celebrating our school heroes and the essential programs they manage. Amidst a global pandemic and economic uncertainty, school meal programs are now more important than ever.

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) serves nearly 30 million children every school day. With unemployment continuing to rise, these meals have become a lifeline for millions of families. Since schools began to shut down across the country in March, foodservice teams have had to adapt to new processes and challenges. They continue to show up each day and deliver millions of meals to kids and families in their communities.

In March of this year, we launched our COVID-19 Support Program as an effort to help our school districts continue delivering meals safely. We gained valuable insight into the challenges and realities of the emergency meals programs, and with the help of the Eat REAL community, were able to support over 2,000 schools as they delivered more than 30,000,000 meals safely.

While we will be spending this week celebrating school districts across the nation, we will also be highlighting the incredible accomplishments of our current cohort of school districts working towards Eat REAL Certification, and the official Certification of Mt. Diablo Unified School District.

Mt. Diablo Unified School District began their journey in fall of 2018, and continued to make meaningful changes, completing their certification process even as this pandemic raged on. We thought this week would be perfect to commemorate their commitment to their students and community, ensuring their families have access to healthy food. Make sure to check in tomorrow to learn more about their incredible accomplishments!
