The Sacramento Kings Announce Eat Real as Community Starting 5 Grantees

Eat Real Is Getting the Royal Treatment

Each season, the Sacramento Kings celebrate five local nonprofits that are creating real change in the Sacramento area. We are proud to announce that we have been selected for the 25-26 season! From in-game features to arena shoutouts and social media love, we’ll be teaming up with the Kings to spread the word about using the cafeteria to make real change for our kids, communities, and planet.

Of course, the work would not be possible without our district partners in the area — Natomas, Western Placer, and Elk Grove School Districts. From sourcing over 90% of their produce from local farms to student taste testing, their work is setting the bar for what school food can be for Sacramento students!

An All Star Supper at Natomas Unified

Natomas Unified’s school supper program provides dinner to the community free of charge, regardless if you have a student attending. This program has proven to be very helpful for student athletes and their families to grab food after school and practice. In September, students at Natomas Unified got the ultimate surprise — Sacramento Kings players serving their meal!

While students were enjoying club sandwiches using whole wheat bread and fresh salad bar items, the Kings players connected with them on how healthy eating fuels their body and minds. There were plenty of photo ops and autographs, but students ultimately took with them how important nutrition and teamwork are — both on and off the court.

During the first week of November, we headed to Golden 1 Center as the Sacramento Kings took on the Golden State Warriors. The energy was high as we cheered alongside our Sacramento school food heroes.

During halftime, we were honored as a Community Starting 5 grantee and received a generous gift from the Kings that will help us to continue our work in Sacramento, and across the nation. It was a moment for fans to celebrate the everyday heroes who bring healthy, delicious meals to students across the area.

Out on the concourse was our Eat Real booth where fans stopped by to learn about our mission. Both kids and adults joined in on the fun with our temporary tattoo station, showing off their real food pride all night!

We’re so grateful to the Sacramento Kings for their generosity and for shining a spotlight on the power of real food in our schools. Together, we’re creating a healthier future — one meal, one student and one game at a time!
