Celebrating Farm to Summer Week!

Eat REAL is celebrating the California Department of Education’s (CDE) Farm to Summer Week this week! Farm to Summer focuses on local food sourcing, and fun food and nutrition education for kids. This celebration creates an excellent opportunity for Child Nutrition Program (CNP) operators to engage with kids and parents by enjoying local and seasonal foods, offering taste test samples of new foods, and providing opportunities for children to have fun with agricultural-based education activities.

Farm to Summer activities provide kids with nutrition and agriculture-based education to foster an understanding of where food comes from and how different food choices can impact their health. Teaching children about real food empowers them to build life-long healthy habits. In addition, locally sourced real foods are not only good for your health, but they also support local communities and the environment.

Eat REAL is working to accelerate Farm to School programs in our schools. We recently hosted a group of school food leaders alongside the First Partner of CA, California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) representatives, Top Chef Chef Tu, and other nonprofit leaders for a summit to discuss challenges and strategies around bringing more regenerative organic foods to schools. After the event, 100% of the school leaders in attendance had either committed to or expressed serious interest in purchasing regenerative organic ingredients for their meal programs.

Head to our Instagram to see how Eat REAL Schools are introducing students to farm to school, and incorporating more locally sourced ingredients into their menus. If you would like to help us support schools in reaching their Farm to School program goals, you can donate to expand our program here.
