Tackling Children’s Hunger with School Meals

Hunger, malnutrition, and food insecurity continue to rise in the United States as the COVID-19 pandemic and its economic consequences rage on. School breakfast and lunch programs are critical for feeding children during the crisis as they serve more than 141 million meals each week. For millions of children, school meals account for up to 50% of their daily caloric intake!

The current cohort of school districts working toward Eat REAL Certification are going above and beyond to ensure students and their families are being fed nutritious, real foods during these uncertain times.

Mt. Diablo Unified School District, our newest certified district, is committed to sourcing minimally processed ingredients – 16 of their 19 current entrée offerings are made from scratch. They have a robust farm-to-school program that sources ingredients from local growers and develops school gardens. Minneapolis Public Schools are serving meal boxes to provide nutritional food for students during remote learning. Vacaville Unified School District is delivering supplemental food boxes for students’ families and producing scratch-made meals daily. Walnut Creek School District is committed to continuing to provide scratch-made meals to all of their students each week. Besides their regular school meal offerings, Boulder Valley School District distributes weekly boxes of prepared foods and fresh produce for children and their families.

Eat REAL is proud to be working with these schools to fight hunger and feed real, healthful food to kids across the country. Together, we can leverage our schools’ power to make lasting changes to our broken food system. Join the Eat REAL community and donate today to support these programs and the movement to provide all children with access to healthful food.
