Eat REAL is Awarded the Prestigious
Battery Powered Grant to Bring REAL Food to
Mount Diablo Unified School District

The REAL Food in Schools Collaborative comprised of Eat REAL, Life Lab, and  Mount Diablo Unified School District (MDUSD) was awarded $189,000 to integrate hands-on garden, nutrition and cooking education and REAL Certified® healthy school food to support lifelong wellness and achievement for 32,000 students in MDUSD of Contra Costa County, California.

The two-year project represents an innovative multi-channel approach to impacting change across several areas of the food landscape for the children of MDUSD.  Eat REAL has begun working to assess, improve and certify food service across the 47 school cafeterias within the District.

Fueled by the Battery Powered grant, Eat REAL’s efforts as a member of the REAL Food in Schools Collaborative provides an important step to improve child nutrition nationally.

State and National Park Certifications

This year, Eat REAL certified 4 State and National parks in Tennessee and California. Henry Horton State Park in Chapel Hill, Tennessee became the first to achieve REAL certification, with David Crocket and Pickwick Landing State parks following shortly after. Muir Woods National Monument in Mill Valley, CA become the second National Park to earn the designation.

To Achieve REAL Certification, these four parks created healthier menus utilizing local and sustainable ingredients. Their hard work and commitment to REAL food truly set them apart as leaders in the National Park System. Their passion and dedication continue to inspire change across the nation.

Healthy Tennessee Communities

Eat REAL Tennessee, and Healthier Tennessee Communities have worked together to share the REAL Certification program and process to health councils and food service throughout the state of Tennessee. Backed by the Governors Foundation for Health and Wellness, Eat REAL Tennessee and the Eat REAL Certified® program can be a nutrition activity adopted by communities seeking a Healthier Tennessee status.

Over fifteen communities across the state have adopted the Eat REAL Certified® program as a nutrition activity for their community. Through this partnership Eat REAL Tennessee is piloting the REAL Certification® process in unique food service operations such as school districts and hospitals. Partnerships are the key to the success of programs working to create a movement that shifts the culture in Tennessee to become more health conscious.
